Philanthropy Hot Spots: Health

Healthcare is one of the most problematic areas in Ukraine. And these problems are the most painful. We are talking life and death.
Ukrainians live 10 years less than others, and suffer from diseases twofold frequently than people in EU countries. Since 1995 tuberculosis epidemic has been declared. AIDS epidemic has been present for several years.
Ukrainian health care itself has been suffering from chronic underfunding for a long time. For example, only 30-40% of required funds is allocated for the national tuberculosis control programs. 80-90% of the equipment in oncologic facilities need to be replaced, but the national program up to 2016 does not provide funding for theses purposes, and local budgets can allocate only 10-20% of the amounts requested.
Gradually, we are deeply tied in terrible illnesses that have long ceased to be a threat only to the disadvantaged people. Every year we get less and less - the birth rate is falling, and the mortality rates increase. Women do not want to give birth, and now for each woman of reproductive age there is less than one child. The rate of infant deaths is increasing at that. And against the bad environment background, especially in the East, cancer is developing.
It was reported that as of January 1, 2011 there were over 960 thousand cancer patients, including 5.5 thousand children registered in oncology facilities.
